BMW owned a company called Glas in the late '60s and rebranded some of their cool stuff.

I wish this was more common nowadays. Having a styling house partner up and produce a semi-limited run of redesigned standard cars. I know Zagato and the like does the occasional 10-car run of Astons or somesuch, but I'm thinking more like the Alfa Junior Zagatos or this Glas BMW. More towards the affordable reasonable volume side of things.
It could really help with some cars that have great mechanicals, but relatively lacklustre or divisive styling.

As an owner of such a car, I agree. We need more externally designed versions of mundane cars!

The GT sort of reminds me of Wiesmann.

They did not only rebadge (and re-engineer, it has a proper BMW engine) this neat nimble Coupe, also the bigger V8. But in the V8 they didn't even found it worthwhile to adapt the double-kidney grille:
It only lasted for one year, reaching 389 being built.

Glas wasn't a styling house for BMW like Zagato was for Alfa, it was a proper factory in the 50's/60's. BMW just bought it to get more production volume as the Neu Klasse exhausted the Munich production capacity. They absorbed the Glass products for only a few years and then killing it entirely.

It also has better suspension from the 1600 sedan.

I did not know that and I'm sure the BMW-version was the better one. But then again, I think the Glas 1700 GT without the kidneys looks way better.

Ah I see. Still, the concept of a standard car altered by another company into a more stylish, but slightly more expensive variant is one I rather like.
